Janet Dick
ID # 5716, (1791-1856)
Birth | Janet Dick was born on 9 February 1791. |
Marriage | She married Robert Hay at Scotland. Familysearch has a database: Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910, FHL microfilm 1,041, 471. This is a transcription which shows the marriage between Robert Hay and Janet Dick on June 1st, 1818, at Symington, Ayr, Scotland. The evidence that they are the parents of William and Robert Hay and their siblings isn't conclusive. If indeed they were the parents of William and Robert and their listed siblings then there were earlier children who remained in Scotland and who are unknown to us. |
Death | She died on 9 February 1856 at age 65. |
Burial | She was buried at Hollen Burying Ground Cemetery, Maryborough Twp.. |
Note | Janet (Dick) Hay appears with sons William and Robert in the 1851 census at Maryborough Township in Wellington County. Janet is age 60 and shown as a widow; William is age 20 and shown as a farmer; Robert is age 22 and shown as a farmer. They are all shown as being born in Scotland and as Presbyterians. No other children of Janet's appear on this list. Familysearch has a database: Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910, FHL microfilm 1,041,471, and this shows the marriage at Symington, Ayr, Scotland, on the 1st of June, 1818, of Robert Hay and Janet Dick. It's likely that this represents the marriage of Janet, the mother of William and Robert, but it is rather early for the list of children that we have and is inconclusive. An obituary for William Hay is to be found in volume 7 of McKenzie's work, Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian, 1873-1880, Global Heritage Press, 2011, page 153, and this tells that he was young when he lost his father. We have some insight into this when we view a transcription of the the family as it appears in the 1841 census at Riccarton in Ayrshire. This shows Janet as a widow and and she has with her 4 children, Robert and William included. The age of the oldest children is such that if the above marriage registration is for the parents of William and Robert then there were older children no longer living with their mother. We have baptism information for five children and they will be quoted in notes for each child. Janet D. Hay, born Feb. 9, 1791, is shown in a transcription of Hollen Burying Ground Cemetery in Maryborough Township of Wellington County as having died on Feb. 9, 1856. See notes for the marriage of William Hay. His parents are named as Robert and Janet. |
