Note | While Robert Hay was born in Scotland and Mary Moffatt unquestionably born and raised a Presbyterian, the family is shown as Wesleyan Methodist in census information. Familysearch has a database: Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, FHL microfilm 1,041,404. This shows Robert's date of birth as 11 April, 1828. This is the same date as is inscribed as his date of birth on his gravestone. His place of birth is shown as Riccarton, Ayr, Scotland, and his parents as Robert Hay and Janet Dick. The location of his baptism is also shown as Riccarton, but this is not dated. Of the seven children we have listed for Robert and Mary, baptism records have been found for three. Ida Reed's transcription of Wesleyan Methodist baptisms is to be found on Bill Martin's Thunder Bay website and is an excellent source for these records. The three children were baptized by different clergymen, but all were baptized in Maryborough Township. The church that the family attended in earlier days is unknown, but the building of a Wesleyan Methodist Church at the village of Hollen was completed in August of 1863 (according to the website FadedGenes) and that was where the family apparently went later. Note that Donald A. McKenzie in volume 10 of his work Obituaries from the Christian Guardian, 1884-1890, Global Heritage Press, 2011, page 188-189, has obituaries for both Lizzie Stevenson Hay and her father, Robert Hay. Robert's obituary mentions that he was the brother of the late William Hay who died in 1874. William Hay's burial is to be found in the Guelph branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society's transcription of Hollen Cemetery as well as that of his brother Robert. A death registration for William has not been found. An obituary for William Hay is to be found in volume 7 of McKenzie's work, Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian, 1873-1880, Global Heritage Press, 2011, page 153.
