Unquestionably, the name as written on the birth registration is Dyrl Ross Brown. A handwriting issue must have been involved, for 'Dyrl' appears as Edwin R. Brown and he is with his family in West Zorra Township at the time of the 1901 census. This census provides a space for the entry of the full birth date and Edwin R. Brown's date of birth is shown in the census as Jan 29, 1896. Where this gets rather more interesting is that at the time of the 1911 census, this son is still with his parents in West Zorra, only now he is shown as Earl and born in January of 1896.

There seems a bit more to the story.

There are two burial markers for Earl in Section F of Ingersoll Rural Cemetery. The first is a metal plaque apparently installed by the Masons. It reads:

Earl R. Brown Jan. 29, 1896 - Mar. 29, 1935

This is in addition to his gravestone which reads:

E. 'Earl' Ross Brown 1896 - 1935. /

Mabel Elizabeth Hutchison 1896 - 1950 /

Parents of Erwin.

The marriage registration, however, clearly shows the grooms name as Erwin Ross Brown, and while nicknames abound in such formal documentation, this is likely his correct name.

Still, 'Earl' was used on his death registration:
