The index for John's attestation papers when he signed up for service during the First World War shows his birth year as 1889. A close examination shows an overtype and it does appear that 1869 was the entry. He claims some 15 years service in the 30th regiment (this may be a militia regiment) as a captain and shows his profession as an engineer. He shows his sister Henrietta as his next of kin. This also shows his middle name as Leece. He was named after his mother's uncle, John Leece. |
