MotherAgnes (--?--) (1784-1867)
BirthAndrew Moscrip was born on 4 November 1811 at Jedburgh, Scotland.
MarriageHe married Joanna Oliver on 4 December 1850 at North Dumfries Township, Waterloo Co..
GS2987 First Church, Galt, marriages

By license in Dumfries on December 4th 1850
Andrew Moscrip and Joanna Oliver, both of Dfs (Dumfries)

There are two witnesses, illegible on the copy. One name begins with Wm. and the other is a Moscrip, perhaps Jessie.

The Gore District Marriage register does not show the above marriage. Walker and Stratford-Devai's work, The marriage Registers of Upper Canada/Canada West, Vol. 13, Gore District, 1842-1856, indicates that pages 121 to 123 of the original book are blank. Their transcription of the book springs from marriage listings in 1849 to, basically, 1854. There are a very few registrations shown for 1851 and 1852, but these may be late submissions, and in any event do not cover Rev. Strang's returns. James Strang was marvelously thorough with his marriage returns and had been since the 1830s when it is obvious from marginal notes that he indeed returned marriages to the district registrar at Hamilton, Robert Berrie. These early returns would have been part of the first volume of the Gore marriage records and which has gone missing. As for the 1850s, returns for First Church in Galt are not to be found in the District Marriage Register after the break in the volume's pages. For later years we must refer to the county marriage registrations or to the church's own records.

DeathHe died on 17 March 1872 at North Dumfries Township at age 60.
BurialHe was buried at Section 4, Mountview Cemetery, Galt.
NoteApologies if what follows involves a bit of a guess, but I hope the reader will find the argument convincing.

We must believe the pages of the 1861 census to be out of order so far as the listing of the Andrew Moscrip family is concerned. This does not appear to be a problem with microfilm imaging, but, simply, one of the enumerator grabbing the wrong sequential page. In the case of the Moscrip family's record this is hardly exceptional.

District 11, North Dumfries, page 86 / 4: At the top it begins with a list of three Moscrip children, Agnes age 7, Mary age 4, and Jessy age 1. Also with the household is Andrew Moscrip, age 26. (A nephew of the elder Andrew?)

Page 89 / 7, at the bottom, finishes with Andrew Moscrip, farmer, born Scotland, age 50; Joanna Moscrip, born Scotland, age 40, and Isabela Moscrip, born Canada, age 1. (The ages should have been as of their next birthday. The 1861 census was begun January 4 of the year.)

In other words, sequentially, page 86 / 4 follows page 89 / 7.

The 1871 census shows the family together in North Dumfries as follows:

Andrew Moscrip, age 60, born Scotland, farmer
'Jemima', age 49, born Scotland (This will be Joanna.)
Isabella, 19, born Ontario
Agnes, 16
Mary, 13
Jessie, 10
And, again, a younger Andrew Moscrip.

Death reg. 026765-72 North Dumfries Twp., Waterloo Co.
Andrew Moscript died 17 March 1872. Age 60 years, 3 mos., 13 days. Farmer. Born Jedburgh, Scotland. Presbyterian. Physician and informant Dr. J. B. Lundy of Beverly.

The Tremaine's 1861 map of North Dumfries shows Andrew Moscrip on a portion of lot 9 of the 12th concession...which brings us to the parentage of Andrew Moscrip

The west side of the family's stone in section 4 of Mountview Cemetery has this inscription:

Thomas Hall Moscrip/died Jan 1, 1840 aged 53 years /
Agnes Moscrip/died Aug 13, 1867 aged 82 years/
their daughters/Jane died Feb 13, 1840 aged 24 years/
Mary Douglas/died Dec 21, 1839 aged 17 years/
all buried in High Park, Galt/

First Church deaths/burials records begin in 1855 and are very intermittent. They do show, however, the death of Mrs. Moscrip on August 13, 1867. Her age is given as 83.

Given that Thomas and Agnes Hall are shown on a side of the same gravestone as that of Andrew and Joanna, we must believe that they are Andrew's parents. As it happens, there is more.

See the Dickson Papers, MS5 reel 4, C6, ledger unnamed, page 193.

This shows a partial record for Thomas Moscrip and identifies his holding as the south part of lot 9 on the 12th concession. The concession number is a bit overwritten, but does appear to be 12. The entries refer to a transaction in ledger D, folio 136, for 170 pounds 2 shillings 7 pence. The entries then go on to enter interest owing that ranges in amounts from ten to twelve pounds and date from what is apparently the original transaction dated 1st January 1838 through to December 31st, 1842. No reference is made to the death of Thomas, but since we do not have the complete entries, prior to this page, or to another ledger (letter illegible) to which the entries were then transferred, we cannot say when son Andrew shouldered the financial responsibility. We can but make two assertions, one, that the Moscrips were present on the 12th concession from at least January of 1838 and that, with such information as we do have, son Andrew was located on the same property as of 1861 when Tremaine's map was printed.

As to the actual place of burial for Thomas and Agnes:

High Park was the location of the First Church cemetery. It was betimes referred to as the Strang Burial Ground. Once the Galt Cemetery was created in 1868 (it wasn't named Mountview until 1886), the cemetery at High Park stopped receiving burials. The condition of High Park cemetery deteriorated and so in the mid 1880s there was a 'dig' and stones and remains were moved to Mountview. Later excavations at High Park indicate that not all remains were found at the time.

For some further Moscrip family burial information, see note under Jane Moscrip, the daughter of Thomas and Agnes.

A note here to do with a bit of an anomaly regarding Andrew Moscrip.

Andrew Moscrip, the husband of Joanna Oliver, unquestionably died in 1872. Note however that in the 1861, age 26. In the 1871 census he is still in the household though aged 44. As of the 1881 census, we find Joanna Oliver Moscrip shown as a widow. Joanna's daughter, Isabella, Mary Jane, and Jessie are with her, but also an Andrew Moscrip, age 55, born Scotland. At a guess, it was probably an enumerators error, but the 1891 census shows Andrew Moscrip, age 64, and Joanna, age 69, as husband and wife. This is entirely possible, though a marriage record for them has not been found, neither a civil record or a First Church record.
The list of First Church communicants does indicate that the younger Andrew was a member until his death. This second Andrew Moscrip died in 1897 and is buried with the Moscrip family in section 4 of Mountview Cemetery.
