Informant Mary Meikleham, mother of child. Date of registration June 28th, 1890. Physician Dr. Jno. Marty. If the gravestone in Chesterfield Churchyard in Blandford Township is that of Robert Meikleham Sr., then young Robert was born after his father's death. Robert's siblings' births were registered by their father. His was the only one registered by his mother. Canadian soldiers' war records are only recently available via the internet from Library & Archives Canada. Robert William Meikleham, who held the rank of captain, is shown as being born in New Hamburg. His mother Mary is shown as residing in Galt. Robert served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War 1 and sustained gunshot and shrapnel wounds to his arm and back on 11th April, 1917, at 'Vimy'. The records of a wounded soldier usually tell the date that the injuries occurred, but not the battlefield location. Image 35 of his war record provides this information. The Battle of Vimy Ridge ran from the 9th to the 12th of April, 1917, so we must believe that it was at this battle that Robert sustained his wounds. The 1921 census shows him as a retail merchant. Robert operated a drugstore in downtown Galt for many years and was a well known figure about town. |
