| Note | It's interesting that in 1881, Joanna and her daughter Leah were enumerated twice. They were with her parents at the time of enumeration at Williams West in Middlesex North. She is shown as married and their name is spelled as Wilcox. Joanna and Leah are with Francis in Manitoba at the time of the enumeration there and the family name is spelled as Wilcocks. Manitoba records indicate that Leah was born in Minnedosa, Manitoba. It would appear that mother and daughter returned to Ontario to visit with family and were picked up in the Ontario census enumeration. Duplicate enumerations are not uncommon, but rarely at such a distance. The Manitoba census shows Francis as a miller and they are three households away from Joanna's half brother Sanford. By 1891, the family is in Brandon, Manitoba. This census shows Francis as county bailiff. The children's names are only shown with initials. The birth dates for the children are mostly taken from the 1901 census. There may be another, probably one that did not survive and for whom a sure record has not been found. A Manitoba vital statistics index locates Joanna's death in Birtle in 1911. Manitoba death registration number 1911-006480. Familysearch has a database, Manitoba Probate Records, 1871-1930. This includes a file number 205, Joanna Cornell Wilcocks. The images for this file include Joanna's will as well as associated probate papers. Joanna left a substantial estate in her own right. |
