Nancy Christner
ID # 4933, (1862-1940)
Father | Christian Christner (1815-1907) |
Mother | Anna Honsberger (1825-1884) |
Birth | Nancy Christner was born on 10 April 1862 at Wilmot Twp., Waterloo Co.. |
Marriage | She married Cummin Forbes Rennie, son of John Blake Rennie and Caroline Keachie, on 21 November 1883 at Wilmot Twp.. Mrge reg. 012434-83 Wilmot Twp., Waterloo Co. C. F. Rennie, 26, bachelor, yeoman, Presbyterian. Born and residing North Easthope. Parents John B. Rennie and Carolina Rennie born Keachie. Nancy Christner, 21, spinster, Mennonite. Born and residing Wilmot Township. Parents Christian Christner and Annie born Honsberger (name not fully legible). Witnesses William K. Rennie of North Easthope, and Barbara Christner of the Tp. of Wilmot. On November 21st, 1883, in the house of Christian Christner, Wilmot, by Rev. John McClung The above marriage registration refers to C. F.Rennie as a 'yeoman'. The handwriting isn't the easiest, but yeoman seems the reasonable interpretation. By 1883, this was a largely archaic term, but, whenever used in earlier years, it almost invariably meant farmer. The name of Nancy's mother is poorly written. Humberger might be the best interpretation of the script. Since this is also at best a guess, reference was made to Ezra Eby's A Biographical History of Waterloo Township and Other Townships in the County (Eby cast a wide net), Berlin, Ontario, 1895. This names Christian Christner's wife as Anna Honsberger. Since her name on the above document could almost be anything, we'll trust Eby. Certainly, her dates of birth and death as shown in Eby agree with the inscription on her gravestone in the Old Christner Cemetery. |
Death | She died on 22 February 1940 at age 77. |
Burial | She was buried at Didsbury Cemetery, Didsbury, Alberta. |
Note | The marriage registration for Cumming and Nancy shows her parents as Christian Christner and Annie. They are buried in the Old Christner Cemetery which is a short distance north of the town of New Hamburg. The cemetery was transcribed by the Waterloo Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1987. The transcription shows the birth and death dates as follows: Christian Christner June 21, 1815 - April 6, 1907 Anna March 15, 1825 - March 20, 1884 See notes under the marriage registration for Cumming and Nancy. Nancy's mother, according to Ezra Eby, was Anna Honsberger. On pages 390 and 391 of Ezra's work, he refers to Nancy as Annie and tells of her marriage to Cummin (so spelled) Rennie. Eby names three children, Percy, Essie and Herbert. Find-a-Grave provides us with a photograph of Nancy's gravestone in Didsbury Cemetery. |
