The inscription on the family gravestone in section 1 of Mountview indicates that James' mother's surname was McLaughlin. 'McLadlaw' is how the name was written on the form by the county registrar.

The Dumfries Reformer of 19 September, 1860, tells us that James and Jane were married in Galt on 7 September, 1860. The groom is described as being of South Dumfries and the bride of North Dumfries. This extraction was provided by Rosemary Ambrose.

James and Jane are buried in section 1 of Mountview Cemetery in Galt in what is evidently a Wilcox family plot. James' parents are buried there. The inscription on the stone reads:

In memory of Richard Wilcox died 16 May 1883 aged 76 years, 8 mo. and 27 d's.
Catherine McLaughlin his wife died 26 June 1885 aged 75 years 3 mo's and 9 d's.
