Note | Our first source of information for James Thompson is the transcription of section 4 in Mountview Cemetery as done by the Waterloo Region Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. James will not have been originally buried in Mountview for it did not exist at the time. As it happens, we have another source of information relating to his original burial. GS2987 First Church Galt (Presbyterian) burials List of Burials 1855 At the bottom of the page we read: James Thompson buried August 24th 1855 died of pulmonary consumpton age 42 a native of Scotland. Since this is a First Church burial of Rev. Strang's, it's reasonable to say that James' original burial was at the First Church cemetery in what is now High Park in Cambridge/Galt. This cemetery stopped receiving burials when the Galt cemetery was established in 1869 - it wasn't called Mountview until years later. In the 1880s, the cemetery was deemed to be in poor shape and there was a 'dig' and stones and remains were removed to Mountview. A note here on the First Church burial book. The pages begin with 1855. There will have been burials at High Park well prior. The entries through to 1869 seem to be hit and miss, with no burials listed for 1858. |
