| Note | Archibald's date of birth, November 3, 1828, is taken from the 1901 census as enumerated in North Dumfries Township. He is shown as being born in the U.S. The census also tells that he came to Canada in 1830. This is probably correct, or nearly so. See notes under Duncan Ferguson, Archibald's father. The Dickson Papers tell that Duncan came from Livingston County in New York State and purchased a portion of lot 5 on the 12th concession on April 1st, 1829. Hugh Cant, Archibald's brother-in-law, in his book Historical Reminiscences of Galt, tells of Duncan then building a cabin and then returning for his wife and child and returning by ox cart. Archibald, a toddler at best, may have been in Upper Canada as early as 1829. |
