BirthJoanna Buchanan was born in 1829 at Dumfries Township, Gore District.
MarriageShe married James Defoe on 3 September 1855 at Toronto, York Co., Canada West.
The Waterloo Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has a PDf of marriages, per notices published in the Dumfries Reformer of Galt for the years of 1853-1859. This tells that in the September 19, 1855 edition of the paper there was a notice to the effect that Joanna Buchanan married James Dafoe in Toronto, at the Baptist Chapel, on Sept. 3, 1855. Joanna is described as the 4th daughter of William Buchanan of Dumfries - which is interesting, for we have her as William's second daughter.

The notice describes James as being of Sheffield in Beverly Township. This being the case, James and Joanna will have not dwelt far apart prior to their marriage.

MarriageShe married Alanson Adams on 23 March 1881 at West Williams Twp., Middlesex Co..

DeathShe died on 9 February 1890 at Thedford, Lambton County.
NoteAfter the death of James Defoe in 1877, Joanna married Alanson Adams in 1881 and she died on February 9, 1890 at Thedford, Ontario. Later that year, Alanson married Joanna's sister, Elizabeth Buchanan Mulholland.

Joanna and James Defoe were in Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan, at the time of the 1860 U.S. census. Their son, shown as Wm. B., is with them, age 1. Since his marriage registration shows that he was born in Greenbank, Reach Twp. in 1858, and the census at Plymouth shows all of them as being born in Canada, they hadn't been in Michigan long. James was a blacksmith.

Joanna 35 and James 35 are in Detroit at the time of the 1870 U.S. census. William age 11 and Jennie age 7 are with them. James is shown as a deputy sherriff. Again, all of them are shown as born in Canada, unless there is an error here so far as Jennie is concerned. However, Jennie's marriage registration at Thedford shows her as born in Canada and her enumeration at Houghton County in Michigan in 1880 shows her birth place as Canada.

There is a problem with Joanna's age. The 1860 census has her as 25 and the 1870 census has her as 35. This would suggest that her birth year was 1835. However, the 1851 census, done in early 1852 and asking for the age as of the next birthday, gives her age as 23 and this would suggest that her birth year was 1829. Looking at the list of Joanna's siblings and their birth years, this is likely correct, though it must be said that if she did knock a few years off her age she was remarkably consistent. This tree will show her birth year as 1829 until further evidence is found.

Death reg. 008382-90 Thedford, Lambton Co.
Joanna Adams died Feb. 9, 1890. Age 55, labourers wife. Presbyterian. Born Ontario. Cause of death 'peritonitis from femoral hernia'.Physician and, apparently, the informant was W. A. Munns, M.D., of Thedford.

The registration page recording Joanna's death has five entries. All are slightly indiosyncratic so far as other registrars understood the requirement. An endorsement at the bottom of the page shows the registrar as Wm. Brooks. He enters the physicians' names (all evidently also informants) as the registrars in the space that requires his (Wm. Brooks) signature. Adjacent pages show something of the same. It is entirely possible that the physicians were indeed the reporting informants as well, though the reporting as such has the look of being rather wholesale. Elsewhere, family members were often the informants. Fourteen deaths for Thedford were returned for the year 1890. Later reports also have problems, one being that the dates of death are not reported on all entries. An entry by Brooks makes it evident that he is aware of some of the omissions. By February of 1891, Brooks' returns are rather more standard.
