The Waterloo Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has a PDf of marriages, per notices published in the Dumfries Reformer of Galt for the years of 1853-1859. This tells that in the September 19, 1855 edition of the paper there was a notice to the effect that Joanna Buchanan married James Dafoe in Toronto, at the Baptist Chapel, on Sept. 3, 1855. Joanna is described as the 4th daughter of William Buchanan of Dumfries - which is interesting, for we have her as William's second daughter. The notice describes James as being of Sheffield in Beverly Township. This being the case, James and Joanna will have not dwelt far apart prior to their marriage. |

| Note | He A Michigan death index made available by Ancestry provides us with a date of death, 17 March, 1877, at Detroit, for James Defoe, born Canada. It does not state where he is buried. James and his family appear in Plymouth, Wayne County, Michigan, in the 1860 U.S. census. The following information is from Detroit City Directories, microfilm series C-5809, found at the Toronto Metro Reference Library. In the 1864-65 directory, the first available, the family is not found. In 1865-66 we find James Dafoe, saloon, 186 Woodward Ave., h. 260 Woodward. 1866-67 James Dafoe, carpenter, h. 401 7th 1867-68 James Defoe, blacksmith, bds. 401 7th. 1868-69 James Defoe, oil agent, 205 Cass. 1869-70 James Defoe, deputy sheriff (this agrees with the 1870 census), h. 235 Cass. 1870-71 James Defoe, (Defoe & Freeman) h. 48 Macomb Ave., Defoe & Freeman (James Defoe & Boliver Freeman) Cigar, Saloon, 112 Griswold. 1871-72 James Defoe, insurance agent, 138 Griswold, h. 81 Adams Ave. W. 1873-74 Not found 1874-75 James De Foe, Notary Public, h. 59 Napolean. 1875-76 ditto, but shows office and home address as same. 1876-77 James De Foe, contractor, h. 358 Prospect.
