Death | She died on 12 April 1870 at Glen Morris, Ontario. |
Burial | She was buried on 15 April 1870 at Maus Cemetery, South Dumfries Township. |
Note | Margaret's death registration was filed with her maiden name. Death reg. 003913-70 South Dumfries, Brant Co. Margaret Colvin died April 12, 1870. Age 26. Cause of death 'bleeding at the lungs, 11 days'. Born South Dumfries. Presbyterian. Physician E. E. Kitchen. Informant John Flanagan, waggon maker, Glenmorris. (Margaret's date of death, April 12, 1870, is quite clear in her death registration. The record of deaths for the Glen Morris church has an interesting entry for this date, ascribing to this the death of John Flanagan. It's obvious that this was Margaret. We do not know if this was a handwriting problem of the clergyman of the day - there are other examples - or if the transcribers had to work with a faded page. This appears in the Glen Morris United Church's records that are found in publications 163, Registers for Baptisms, Marriages, Deaths, etc. reprinted 2006, by the Brant County branch of the OGS.) At the time of the 1861 census in South Dumfries John Flanagan was enumerated with the Colvin household as a laborer. He is apparently living with them. Margaret is 18 and John is 24. Margaret's gravestone in Maus/Paris Plains is in poor condition, per a transcription done in 2006. It shows her as Margaret B. Colvin, wife of John...and that seems to be it. Her death notice appeared in the Brantford Weekly Expositor issue of April 22, 1870, page 2 (see microfilm N 84 reel 4 P) : On Tuesday, 12th April, Margaret B. Colvin, wife of Mr. John Flanagan, of Glenmorris, 26th year. It's clear, especially from the middle initial, that Margaret is buried at Maus/Paris Plains. John Flanagan died 54 years later in 1924 and is buried in Paris Cemetery with his second wife, Margaret Bell. Margaret's death also appeared in the Dumfries Reformer issue of April 13, 1870: Colvin, Margaret B. 12 Apr 1870 Margaret B. Colvin, wife of John Flanagan, Glenmorris; in her26th year. Interment in Maus's Church cemetery on April 15, 1870. It's evident from a transcription of records for Glen Morris United Church (at the time Presbyterian), that John and Margaret Flanagan attended in early years. Three children were baptized there and Margaret's death is mentioned in the record from 1870. No marriage record has been found and this includes the county marriage registrations. |
