familysearch.org provides us with a transcription of a marriage record for James Colvin and Mary Beckwith.

James Colvin, born 1835, age 29, spouse Mary E. Beckwith, born 1843, age 21, married 9 December, 1864, at Vergennes Township, Kent County, Michigan.

DeathHe died on 18 June 1903 at Fallasburg, Vergennes Twp., Kent Co., Michigan, at age 70.
BurialHe was buried on 20 June 1903 at Fallasburg Cemetery, Vergennes Twp., Kent Co., Michigan.
NoteInitially, we only knew of James through his presence in South Dumfries/Glen Morris in the 1851 census. There, he is a blacksmith and residing with his brother William. A Jenet Colvin, age 16, is also present in the household and believed to be a sister.

James is likely the James Calvin, Culvin, Colvin, in various U.S. censuses in Vergennes Twp., Kent Co., Michigan. He is betimes a blacksmith or a farmer. He first appears in the 1860 census at Vergennes and is found there in the 1900 census. Where the questions were asked, he places his birth in Canada, but his parents' births in Scotland. James married a Mary Beckwith and had a family.

It should also noted that at the time of the 1861 census in Canada, James appears with Robert and Rebecca Hunter in Blandford Township in Oxford County. His residence is shown as being in the United States. He is shown as a blacksmith. Rebecca is his sister.

An aspect of the 1851 census pages should be noted here. A page was given with names and ages and places of birth. Next came a statistical page that included marital status, sex, and whether one was a member of the family. Since William and Jenet are shown as single and since James is shown as married with no sign of a wife, given the nature of the page, it is likely that this is an error. As of 1852, it doesn't seem reasonable that James had met Mary Ellen Beckwith. Also, given the order of the listings, it isn't reasonable that Jenet is James' wife.
