Harvey Buchanan, 32, farmer, born South Dumfries (actually Blenheim Twp., Oxford County), residing Glenmorris. Parents William Buchanan and Catharine Harvey. Maggie E. Harper, 29, teacher, born and residing Arthur Twp. Parents William Harper and Catherine McMillan. Witnesses William Buchanan jr., of Glenmorris and Cora Harper of Arthur Twp. On 4 August, 1898, at Arthur Twp. Clergyman Rev. R. Pettigrew. Considering entries in the family bible, Rev. R. Pettigrew was apparently the minister at the Glen Morris Church and he may have been a family friend. Robert Pettigrew was the officiating minister at the marriage of Bessie Buchanan and Andrew Colvin in 1884 and the family bible shows the clergyman as Robert Pettigrew of Glen Morris. He assisted at the marriage of Dan Buchanan and Mina Paul in 1897 and he evidently travelled to Arthur Township in Wellington County to perform the marriage of Harvie Buchanan and Margaret Harper. He seems to have been on good terms with the family. |

| Note | She Margaret Elizabeth Harper was born in Arthur Township on the family farm on the Owen Sound Road (O.S.R.), near Mount Forest. Margaret's parents were William Harper and Catherine MacMillan. William was born in Co. Cavan, Ireland, and came to Canada in his youth with his mother Elizabeth, his father, believed to be a Philip Harper, being deceased. On the marriage registration for Harvie and 'Maggie', Margaret is said to be a teacher. A Cora Harper appears as a witness. They were married by Rev. R. Pettigrew. Apparently Harvie and Margaret met when she taught at the school at Glen Morris. Death reg. 036076-31 Hamilton, Wentworth Co. Margaret E. Buchanan died at Ontario Hospital, Hamilton, on March 30, 1931. Residence Galt. Married. Born June 16, 1869, Arthur Township. Age 61 years, 9 months, 14 days. At place of death 21 years, in province life. Father William Harper, born Ireland, mother born in Scotland. Burial April 2, 1931, Galt Cemetery. Informant H. Buchanan, 23 Salisbury Ave., Galt, Ont. |
