John Bonham

ID # 3945
MarriageJohn Bonham married Eliza Ann Wilber, daughter of Jeremiah Wilber and Susan Kitchen
NoteWe only know of John Bonham's given name from son Milbre's marriage registration. Cemetery transcriptions have been searched, but a record of his death or burial has not been found. Certainly, Eliza Wilber Bonham with son Milbre, was in South Dumfries as of the 1861 census. She is shown as married. She is shown likelwise in the 1871 census. Rather more likely, she was widow by 1861. We have no direct information, however.

There was a sizeable extended Bonham family in South Dumfries as of the 1851 census. While there can be no certainty, it's probable that John Bonham, the husband of Eliza, was John L. Bonham, age 24, who appeared with siblings and mother Sarah in South Dumfries in 1851. This notion can at least be entertained, if for no other reason than the fact that he has a brother Milbre. Milbre, son of John and Eliza, may be named after John's brother. Of course, there are other possibilities.

Further unconfirmed research seems to indicate that John's father was Elam Bonham. Elam died in 1850 and is buried in St. George Cemetery. Sarah Bonham, who is believed to be his wife, died in 1874. The informant was John Bonham, farmer, South Dumfries. The South Dumfries page that Sarah's death registration appears on is badly faded, but, mainly, readable. It does not clearly identify who she might be in terms of any relationships.

Elam Bonham's will, if such a document exists, is likely in the Gore District records which are domiciled in Hamilton and should be on microfilm at the Archives of Ontario.
