Birth | Maria Louise Goodell was born in 1842 at Clarkson, Monroe County, New York. |

MS248 reel 5, Vol. 1, page 133 Brant County Marriage Register Return of marriages solemnized by Rev. Dr. Thos. Leslie Davidson, Baptist minister, for the year ending the 31st day of December, 1863 George S. Wait, 25, born and residing South Dumfries. Parents Jonathan and Cynthia Wait. Maria L. Goodell, 21, born Clarkson, Monroe County, N.Y., residing South Dumfries. Parents Abner and Elizabeth Goodell. Witnesses Chas. P. Bell and Eunice Griffin, both of S. Dumfries. On Oct. 14, 1863. The Hamilton Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides extracts of marriages and obituaries from the Christian Messenger (though by January 5, 1860, the name of the publication was changed to Canadian Baptist, which was printed at Toronto each Thursday. The October 22nd, 1863, issue of this publication has a marriage notice for George S. Wait and Maria Louise Goodell and tells that they were married at the residence of the bride's father, near St. George. It tells that the couple were both of South Dumfries. While, typically, the county marriage registrations do not record the exact location of a marriage, with the information provided by the Canadian Baptist, we may say the couple was married in South Dumfries. (See notes under Maria. This will actually have been the residence of the bride's step father, Hezekiah Mainwaring.) |
Death | She died on 16 September 1876. |
Burial | She was buried at St. George Cemetery, South Dumfries Twp.. |
Note | Death reg. 001277-76 South Dumfries, Brant Co. Louisa M. Wait died September 16, 1876. Age 33, farmer's wife. Baptist. Cause of death consumption one year. Informant George Wait, farmer, South Dumfries. See notes under son Richard Abner. The marriage registration for George S. Wait and Maria L. Goodell shows the parents of Maria as being Abner Goodell and Elizabeth. What follows is a guess and yet to be confirmed: The 1851 census in South Dumfries shows Mariah Mainwaring, age 9, in the household of Hezikiah Mainwaring and his wife Elizabeth The 1861 census in South Dumfries shows 'Liese' (not clearly written) Goodale, age 18, and Henry Goodale, age 22, in the household of Hezekiah Mainwaring and his wife Elizabeth. These are probably the 1851 and 1861 records for Louise, or Maria Louise, Goodell and brother Henry. They are likely living with their mother and Hezekiah is probably their step father. This may yet be corrected, but for the moment at least the logic of the situation is that she is Maria Louise Goodell, or Goodale, who married George S. Wait. The marriage registration for George and Maria also places Maria's birth in Clarkson, Munroe County, New York. This leads us to a photo of a gravestone in West Clarkson Cemetery, Clarkson, New York, as provided by Find-a-Grave. The gravestone is inscribed: Abner Goodell / Principal of Clarkson Academy / died Mary 29, 1845 / aged 39 years. H.C. (Hezikiah) Mainwaring is buried in St. George Baptist Church Cemetery. With him is buried wife Elizabeth. She is probably Maria's mother and that her first husband was Abner Goodell. When we consider that Maria's second son had the middle name of Abner, it does seem likely that her father was indeed Abner Goodell. |
