Death | He died on 4 June 1926 at Trafalgar Township, Halton County, at age 79. |
Burial | He was buried on 7 June 1926 at Section U, Hamilton Cemetery, Hamilton, Ontario. |
Note | Wilder's grandfather, Elisha Babcock, had a brother Wilder, for whom we must believe young Wilder to be named. Wilder the elder died in 1854 and is buried in Sheffield Cemetery. The older Wilder Babcock was an innkeeper, so young Wilder's occupation of hotel keeper as it appears on his marriage registration is in keeping with family tradition. Son Wilder Royal Babcock is born in 1878 in Town of Dundas (as opposed to Dundas County.) The 1881 census shows him as Roy. At the time of the 1881 census, Wilder and Sarah are still in Dundas and he is still a hotel keeper. The have with them son Roy, age 2, and son Hamilton, age 2 months. Since Hamilton was Wilder's mother's maiden name, this is probably the origin for the name of the youngest member of the family. Son Elgin Hamilton Babcock is born in February of 1881 and appears as two months of age in the 1881 census which was taken in April. At some point prior to Susan's birth in 1887, the family moved to Hamilton where Susan was born. In 1891, the family is in Hamilton with all three of their children. Wilder is shown as a commercial traveler. Wilder's occupation is illegible on the 1901 form, though the family is still all together in Hamilton. In 1911, the family members are all still present and Wilder is shown as a commercial traveller and his sales work is related to lightening rods. By 1921, young Wilder and Susie are still with Wilder and Sarah. He is 73 and still shown as a traveller. Death reg. 016592-26 Trafalgar Township, Halton County Wilder Babcock died June 4th, 1926. Age 79 years, 6 months. Married. Born Beverly Twp., Ont., December 19th, 1846. Lightening road agent. Length of residence at place of death 4 years, in Ontario life. Father Wilder Babcock, born Ireland. Mother Isabella, born Boston, Mass., U.S.A. Physician Dr. A. M. Wilkinson of Oakville. Informant A. H. Bayne, 55 Cameron W., Hamilton, son-in-law. Place of burial Hamilton. Date of burial June 7th, 1926. Burial Hamilton (Cemetery). At the bottom of the form is the note 'permit issued by coroner.' This is unexplained. We must believe that shortly after the 1921 census that Wilder and Sarah moved to Trafalgar Township for he was evidently in residence there some four years. The registration is in error in that his father was John, not Wilder, and John was born in Upper Canada and not Ireland. A transcription of Hamilton Cemetery informs us that John and Sarah are buried in Section U. Their inscription reads: 226. Wilder Babcock / died June 4, 1926 / his wife Sarah McLean / 1855 '96 1934. (The next stone is for a Gwendoline Babcock. It reads: Babcock / Gwendoline died July 30, 1908 stone broken A death registration for Gwendoline or who she was has yet to be found.) |
