BirthIsabella Hamilton was born in 1825.

GS2987 First Presbyterian Church, Galt
Marriage nbr. 87
After publication of bans in Dumfries Jan 5th, 1841.
John S. Babcock and Isobel Hamilton, both of Dumfries.
Witnesses John Laurason and Samuel S. Doud.

This marriage does not appear in a Gore District marriage register. The available registrations in the Gore pick up in 1842. It is believed that there was an earlier register prior to 1842 that has not survived. The above microfilm is an extract of records from the First Presbyterian marriage books. The United Church Archives also has these records microfilmed on LCM 30 and 31.

The pages of the First Church marriage book, as it appears on the microfilm is of mixed clarity so far as readability is concerned for there is some fading. John and Isobel's marriage record however is quite decipherable. The handwriting is probably that of Rev. James Strang.

DeathShe died in 1897.
BurialShe was buried at Sheffield Cemetery, Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co..
NoteAs noted under the information for John Babcock, Isabella married after John's death to David Tansley. The registration appears in the Gore District Marriage Register, very nearly at the end. See:

Gore District Marriage Register

Marriages by Rev. Simon Huntington (Wesleyan Methodist Minister)

David Tansley and Isabella Babcock, both of Beverly, on May 13, 1856, by License. Witnesses David Cornell and Chas. Bennet.

(David and Isabella were married in May of 1856. Rev. Huntington died in August of the same year and is buried in Woodhouse United Church Cemetery. At least in theory, the new counties were already established, but the marriage of David and Isabella is recorded in the Gore District Marriage Register. Rev. Huntington died in Norfolk County at St. Williams, which was in the old Talbot District. Neither the district nor early county marriage registers typically gave the exact location of the marriage. The implication here is that since Rev. Huntington had only recently had a charge at Grimsby, he must have done some traveling in the performance of his marriage responsibilities - which may well have taken him to the Beverly Township area. Given that Beverly worthies such as David Cornell and Charles Bennett are witnesses to the marriage, this seems likely. David Cornell was present in Beverly at the time of the 1851 census. He is almost certainly the David Cornell who was in Bosanquet Township in Lambton County in 1861. We may further note here that Ellen Jane Babcock, a daughter of John and Isabella, married Enoch Cornell, a family connection of David's, and she lived for a time in Bosanquet Township as well.)

Isabella is with husband David at the time of the 1861 census in Beverly. With them are two Tansley children, evidently theirs, as well as two Babcock children, Wilder and Margaret Ann, Isabella's children by John Babcock. By 1871, there are six Tansley children present, though Wilder and Margaret Ann Babcock have moved on.

Death reg. 026883-97 Beverly Township, Wentworth County
Isabella Tansley died March 16, 1897. Residence lot 5 of the 5th concession. Wife of D. Tansley. United Brethren. Informant Dr. Manes.

The handwriting of the Beverly Township registrar, Wallace McDonald, takes a bit of liberal interpretation. We are assisted with the above information by the transcription done of Sheffield Cemetery by the Hamilton branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. A portion of stone 214 reads:

David Tansley / 1824 - 1899 / his wife Isabella Hamilton / 1825 - 1897.

Children of Isabella Hamilton and John Babcock
