Robert Nixon
ID # 3485, (1793-1852)
| Birth | Robert Nixon was born on 26 August 1793. |
| Marriage | He married Elizabeth Corwine in 1817. But one reference for the marriage of Robert Nixon has been found and, while it doesn't provide a date is sufficient to identify the persons involved. This is to be found on page 62 of The American Monthly Magazine and Critical Review, Vol. 1, New York, 1817. The heading is Domestic Occurences. Three marriages are mentioned which occurred at 'Clinton', one of them being Mr. Robert Nixon of Grimsby to Miss Betsy Corwine. This marriage, or perhaps a relating news article, appears to be in April of the year. No other information is given. Wikipedia provides five possibilities for a Clinton, New York. Of course, there is also the possibility that it refers to Clinton Township, Ontario, which would be close to Grimsby. It seems likely that The American Monthly Magazine had a following in Upper Canada. Such a situation in later decades certainly applied to the Niagara Falls (New York) Gazette. |
| Death | He died on 6 October 1852 at St. George, South Dumfries Twp., Brant Co., at age 59. |
| Burial | He was buried at St. Andrews Anglican Church Cemetery, Grimsby. |
| Note | Our information for the gravestones of Robert and Elizabeth Nixon is taken from a transcription of St. Andrew's Anglican Church Cemetery at Grimsby. Elizabeth's maiden name is not given. It's possible that Robert's parents are here as well, for there are graves recorded for Allan Nixon Sr. who died March 25, 1813, age 49 and his wife Mary who died March 25, 1813. Note: Glanbrook Heritage provides a transcription of the death notice for Robert Nixon as it appeared in the Saturday, Oct. 9, 1852, edition of the Hamilton Spectator. This places his death at St. George in Dumfries (South) Township. It does tell that his death was the previous Saturday, though this may be an error related to the day of the paper. The gravestone transcription shows his death on the 6th of October, 1852, and this was a Wednesday. A Saturday funeral in this case would make sense. |
