Marriages by Rev. F. M. Smith of the Methodist Episcopal Church

Thomas Badger, 32, place of birth not shown. Residing Hamilton. Parents Jno. and Elizabeth Badger.
Ellen O'Connor, 22, born St. Catharines, residing Beverly. Parents Thos. and Joanna O'Connor.
Witnesses Jas. Ackin and Adam Nisbet, both of Beverly.
On Dec. 2, 1867.

County marriage registrations from this era do not show the location of the marriage. It almost certainly took place in Wentworth County. There was a Methodist Episcopal Church at Troy in Beverly Township and, probably that was where the marriage was held.

The Troy History of 1947 tells that Adam Nisbet, one of the witnesses in the above marriage registration, was Thomas' employer at one time.

DeathShe died on 26 August 1917 at Merritton, Ontario, at age 71.
BurialShe was buried on 29 August 1917 at Lakeview Cemetery, Thorold.
NoteEllen's place of birth, on one or two death registrations for her children, place her birth in Harrisburg (Ontario). Her marriage registration shows her place of birth as St. Catharines.

The Niagara Peninsula branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has a searchable index entitled Thorold Death Books. This appears to be burial book records for Lakeview Cemetery. This shows her as Hellen and shows that she died at Merritton and has both her date of death and date of burial. It also shows her place of birth as Harrisburg.

Rather more convincing, however, is the 1851 census as enumerated at Thorold Village. Recall that the marriage registration for Ellen and Thomas shows her parents as Thomas and Joanna O'Connor. The 1851 Thorold Village census enumerator had a pleasant wrinkle to his entries in that he was quite specific as to showing where someone was born. Ellen's parents were both born in Ireland. Her two older siblings are shown as being born in St. Catharines, but Ellen herself, shown as age 2 as of her next birth (this would almost certainly be in 1852), has her place of birth entered as Thorold. The parents will have given this information. Even here, there is room for error, but given that Ellen is the youngest child present this is probably correct.

(Yes, there's a problem with this. The 1901 census shows Ellen's birth year as 1846 and this rather agrees with other census years. It's difficult, however, to get around the idea that the 1851 Thorold Village census represents Ellen's family.)
