Note | The registration number for the birth of Lawrence Melville Badger as it appears on the Manitoba Vital Statistics website is: 1902-007789. This give his date of birth as 31 October, 1902, at Shoal Lake. Lawrence filled out his attestation papers to join the Canadian Army on August 8th, 1917, at Winnipeg. Therein, he gave his date of birth as October 31st, 1898, some four years earlier than his correct birthdate. The examining medical authority did not quibble with this. His digitized record states that he served for 7-1/2 months in France with nbr. 12 CRT - apparently Canadian Railway Troops. Apparently these units kept railways running. (Anolther page describes him as serving with the # 10 Forestry and Railway Const. unit. This service was probably in England and after being found out as a minor.) Apparently he received his discharge on 21 January, 1919, for reason of being a minor. His age is given as 16 years, 3 months. A later page states that his date of birth was 31 October, 1902. En route home on ship Lawrence suffered influenza. Given the era, this could be serious, but he is recorded as recovering well. The army appears to have given Lawrence a reasonable severance when he was discharged. It is possible that Lawrence was seeking some excitement when he joined the army, but a simpler answer may be that his immediately senior brothers were in the army. Perhaps he managed some leave with them. Or perhaps it was one of them that 'ratted' him out with the intention of keeping him out of harms way. There is probably a family story in this somewhere. |
