Oliver Neff
ID # 3376, (1855-1935)
Birth | Oliver Neff was born on 11 October 1855 at Troy, Beverly Township. |
Marriage | He married Elizabeth Ann Badger, daughter of Thomas Badger and Margaret Pearce, on 1 December 1875 at Lynden, Ontario. At least a couple of researchers have had difficulty extracting a clear image of the marriage registration for Oliver Neff and Elizabeth ann Badger from the microfilm. Familysearch appears to have made the best job of it and the results are readable: Mrge reg. 010123-75 Ancaster Twp., Wentworth Co. Oliver Neff, 20, bachelor, merchant, Methodist. Born and residing Troy. Parents Saul and Harriet Neff. Elizabeth Ann Badger, 20, spinster, Methodist. Born Jerseyville, residing Troy. Guardians John and Harriet Gamble. Witnesses T.P. Laurason and Christie Ironside, both of Troy, Ont. On Dec. 1st, 1875, at Lynden, by Rev. O.H.P. Green, by License. The clergyman's initials are questionable as are the initials of 'T.P.' Laurason. The groom's father's name is written as Saul. Actually, his name was Samuel Neff, who, according to John A. Cornell in his Pioneers of Beverly, 1889, was the first storekeeper at the village of Troy. |
Death | He died on 1 September 1935 at age 79. |
Burial | He was buried at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Moosomin, Sask. |
Note | Oliver and Elizabeth are in Beverly at the time of the 1881 census. Harriett Gamble's will locates the family in Moosomin in 1909. Online information has him being appointed clerk of the court at Moosomin in the NWT, later Saskatchewan, in 1887. He is still there in that capacity at the time of the 1901 census. There is evidence that he may have been mayor of Moosomin at some point. At the time of the 1881 census, Oliver and Elizabeth have a son Edgar with them, born in 1877. At the time of the 1901 census they have a son, Garnet C. with them, born in 1887. At a Saskatchewan Government web site with genealogical information son Garnet is recorded as being born in Saskatchewan, as well as a daughter Harriett Gertrude. Elizabeth gives her maiden name as Badger in both cases. Find-a-Grave does show Oliver and Elizabeth in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Moosomin. There is evidently another Neff family buried in the cemetery with antecedants back to Beverly Township. This has not been investigated. |
