Mrge reg. 023158-07 York Twp., York County William Leonard Baynes-Reed, 36, bachelor, Clerk in Holy Orders, Anglican. Born London, Ont., residing Norway (Ontario). Gilbert and Ellen Margaret Ambery. Witnesses W. Kurtamen, Toronto, and illeg Hopkirk, Toronto. On September 4, 1907, at St. John's Norway, banns, by Robert Gay. There are three marriages listed on this registration page, of which William and Gretchen's is one. The other two were performed by William Baynes-Reed in November of 1907. In September, at any rate, William is shown as a 'Clerk in Holy Orders'. Either this title enabled him to perform marriages, or he only came into his authority as a marrying clergyman after his own September marriage. The full name, The Anglican Church of St. John the Baptist, has with time been simply called St. John's Norway. It is located in what was the village of Norway and which was eventually amalgamated into the city of Toronto in 1908. Norway had it's own post office which opened in 1866 and closed in 1901 (see Floreen Carter's Ghost & Post Offices of Ontario, 1986). |
Death | She died on 12 June 1914 at Wellesley Hospital, Toronto, York Co., at age 31. |
Burial | She was buried on 15 June 1914 at St. John's Norway Cemetery, Toronto. |
Note | Violet Winnifred Gretchen Gilbert was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, on June 22, 1882. A birth registration as such isn't available, but Ancestry carries images for the Drouin Collection and this has pages from Sherbrooke's Church of England records for 1882. The page reads: Baptism Gilbert, V.W.G Violet Winifred Gretchen, infant daughter of Henry Langton Gilbert, Esp., M.D., Ellen Marian(?) his wife, was born on the 22nd of June AD 1882, and was baptised on the 23rd of July following, By me, (the signatures which following are nearly illigible, but the rector had the last name of Reid. This was followed by two other signatures, one surname of which appears to be Tomlinson, and the other Ambery.) Gretchen did not have long to enjoy her father, for (again) the Drouin Collection provides Church of England records for Sherbrooke and states that Henry Langton Gilbert M.D. of Sherbrooke, died 28th January, 1888, age 33, and was buried on the 31st. Death reg. 004058-14 Toronto, York Co. Violet Winnifred Gretchen Baynes-Reed, age 31, died June 12, 1914. Place of death Wellesley Hospital. Born Shebrooke, Quebec. Married. Informant Daniel Stone, 525 Sherbourne Street. Gretchen is buried in St. John's Norway Cemetery. The Toronto Branch of the OGS provides a transcription: Gretchen/ wife of W.L. Baynes-Reed June 22, 1882 - June 12, 1914. A brief obituary appears for Gretchen in the Saturday, June 13, 1914, edition of the Toronto Daily Star. It notes her background and states that her funeral would be on Monday the 15th. The obituary tells that her father was Dr. H. Gilbert of Sherbrooke and that her grandfather was Rev. John Ambery, the first dean of Trinity College in Toronto. With all the Anglicanism in the family, we must wonder at her religious denomination being stated as Baptist on her marriage registration. |
