| Marriage | She married Levi Wait, son of Samuel Wait and Anna Shoup, on 17 November 1846. MS248 reel 1, Vol. 4, page 50, Gore District Marriages Marriages by Rev. John Low, Wesleyan Methodist Minister. Levi Waite and Hester E. Cope, both of Dumfries, were married on November 17, 1846, by Publication (of banns). Witnesses Samuel Waite and John W. Moe. The surname of the witness John W. Moe, as written, takes a bit of creative reading, but Moe is unquestionably correct. John Wesley Moe was Levi Wait's step-brother. John's parents were Henry Moe and Teressa Coleman. Teressa Coleman was Levi's step-mother by his father's second marriage. That the marriage was performed after the publication of banns does not necessarily mean that it was a church wedding. It may very well have been held at a family home, probably that of the bride. |

| Note | Hester Eliza Cope, wife of Levi Wait, is buried in St. George Cemetery. The Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides a transcription of her gravestone: Section A, row 16, stone 15: Hester E. wife of Levi Wait died Dec. 29, 1853 aged 24 years. It is evident that Hester is buried with her parents. Stone 13 reads: In memory of Jacob Cope who died April 30, 1855 aged 81 yrs 2 mos 11 dys. Stone 14 reads: In memory of Phebe Owen wife of Jacob Cope died 31 May 1878 aged 87 yrs 3 mos 15 dys. A transcription of St. George Cemetery was done again in 2007 and it is stated that Jacob Cope's stone was nearly unreadable by that time. |
