Nelson Keefer, of Burlington, Ontario, subsequently entered into mercantile business in Hamilton. As previously stated he married in 1854 Mary Hodge Ballantyne. Their elder son Robert married Ellen Murison, and now resides in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. They have three children. The youngest son, Alexander Thomas, is in a mercantile establishment in Hamilton. He is married to Louise Irene Fraser, and has two children. Mary Murray, the elder daughter of Nelson Keefer and Mary Hodge Ballantyne, and wife of Alexander Cadenhead, of Midland, resides there. They have five children; Margaret Jane, the youngest daughter, is teaching in Midland, County of Simcoe.

In the 1861 census at South Dumfries, Nelson is shown as a merchant. Mary is age 29 and said to be born in Scotland. With them is Agness Balintine, age 16, born in Canada, and, perhaps, is Mary's sister.

In 1871, the family is in Nelson Township of Halton County. Here, Nelson is shown as a clerk. Again, Mary is shown as born in Scotland.

In 1881, the family is in Burlington and Nelson is shown as a merchant.

In 1891, Nelson and Mary are on their own in Burlington. No profession is shown.

In 1901, they are in Hamilton and Nelson is shown as a grocer.

Nelson Keefer died Sept. 14, 1906, age 75, address Spencer Street. Born Canada. Presbyterian. The informant was his doctor.

When Mary died years later, she was to be buried in Burlington. Nelson is likely buried there as well, though in just which cemetery hasn't been found.
