Note | Marjorie Vrooman, age 1, appears in the 1892 New York State census with her parents in Galen, Wayne County, New York. She is shown as being born in the U.S. What follows may be found in a number of newspapers made available by Old Fulton New York Postcards. Marjorie is variously described, but apparently was a canteen worker for the Red Cross at an American Army rest area in the Pyrenees. Something of her story appears in the obituary for her mother in The Clyde Herald, February 14, 1934. It tells how she went to France where she was a YMCA social worker. She died March 4, 1919, in Canterets, France, as the result of an illness contracted there. The story states that her remains were returned to Clyde for burial. Other publications make it clear that Marjorie was first buried with full military honours in the American Military Cemetery in Bordeaux, France, in March of 1919. Her remains were removed and taken to Clyde, New York, in November of 1919. One story states that she died of pneumonia. She is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery with her parents. Stories in the local newspaper tell how she was an accomplished singer and that she spent time as a 'settlement worker' in Puerto Rico before going to France. A photo of Marjorie appears in the several newspaper publications providing an account of her death. Find-a-Grave provides photos of the gravestones for Marjorie's parents in Maple Grove Cemetery. While not indexed, Marjorie's gravestone is shown as well, in front of the large family stone. Her stone is mainly readable. Marjorie R./their dau./1891-1919/d.
