MS248 reel 10, Vol. 33, page 92 Lincoln County Marriage
By the Rev. J. McGillivray, Canada Presbyterian Church

Samuel McFate, 24, born (looks like) Penn, NY, residing St. Catharines. Parents Samuel and Elizabeth.
Eliza Field, 25, born and residing Grimsby. Parents John and Elizabeth Field.
Witnesses: Andrew Randall of Grimsby. There is a second witness, but the name of the person and residence is illegible.
On 24 October, 1867.

Going by the 1850 and 1860 censuses, Samuel's place of birth was Pennsylvania. Samuel's surname, McFate, has been variously transcribed from this registration, but, with knowledge of his correct name sorted out beforehand, it is quite obviously entered on the page as McFate.

The county marriage registrations from this era do not typically tell us the place of the marriage. It may well have been in Grimsby, either town or township, but this isn't certain.

DeathHe died on 4 February 1890.
BurialHe was buried at Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St. Catharines, Ontario.
NoteSamuel's last name was spelled McFait in the 1871 census at St. Catharines. Other spellings seem to suggest that McFate is rather more correct. The microfilm for the marriage record has not been examined. One transcription shows him as Samuel M. Tate. This is almost certainly McFate.

The family's name is shown as McFate in the 1881 census at St. Catharines.

Samuel died in 1890.

Death reg. 009809-90 St Catharines, Lincoln Co.
Samuel McFate died Feb 4, 1890. Age 50, mechanic. Born United States. Methodist.

A transcription for Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines has not been examined, but he appears to be buried there.

A family history from 1888 appears online and shows Samuel's birth place as Venango, Pennsylvania. His parents were Samuel McFate and Elizabeth Black. Samuel served in the army during the Civil War and was wounded at Fredericksburg. He came to Canada after the war and married Eliza Field. The 1888 history names Samuel and Eliza's son as Samuel. Since we have his name as John in the 1871 and 1881 censuses, it remains as such in this tree.
