John Morden Field
ID # 1683, (1793-)
Birth | John Morden Field was born in 1793. |
Christening | He was christened on 30 June 1794 at St. Marks Anglican Church, Niagara-On-The-Lake. |
Marriage | He married Elizabeth Ann Vrooman, daughter of Adam Vrooman and Margaret Mattice. The 1949 Vrooman Family book states that Elizabeth Ann Vrooman married Chrysler Field. Going by the registrations of deaths of two of their children, it seems that John Morden Field was the correct name of the husband of Elizabeth Ann Vrooman. |
Burial | He was buried at Smithville Union Cemetery. |
Note | St. Mark's Anglican Church, Niagara-on-the-Lake, baptisms, 1794, show the following record: 30 June 1794, John Morden, son of Gilbert and Ellin Field. See page 107, Vital Records of Upper Canada / Canada West, Volume 1: Part 2/Niagara District/1792-1849, compiled by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai/Global Genealogy Press, Milton, Ontario/2000. It is believed that Ellin (or Eleanor) Field's maiden name was Morden. John Morden Field and his wife Elizabeth Ann Vrooman are buried in Smithville Union Cemetery. This was transcribed by the Niagara Peninsula branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1991. The stone must have been worn, for it shows John's death as occuring in 1860 and Elizabeth Ann's in 1885. By the time of Elizabeth Ann's death, there were such civil records as death registrations and, documentably, Elizabeth Ann died in 1889. The problem with John's year of death is that he was still living as of the 1861 census which was begun in August of the year. Since he is not present with the family as of the 1871 census, we must believe that he died during the previous decade. A photograph of the family gravestone is to be found on Canadian Headstones and it appears to show a death year of 1860. A closer examination might tell a different story, or it's possible that the gravestone wasn't erected until some years later and an error was made. |
