Walter and Elizabeth were residing Yorktown at the time of their marriage Married in the church of Yorktown after banns, by me F. M. Middleton. The witnesses were Thos. W. Sheppard and Charlotte Sheppard. The form is signed, apparently by the contracting couple, but there are similarities in the handwriting with the rest of the form and was likely a copy signed by the clergyman. |

| Note | Elizabeth Emily Cook was the daughter of Richard Sheppard and his wife Emily (possibly named Elizabeth Emily). Alfred Richard Cook is shown as the grandson of Richard Sheppard in the UK 1871 census at Wokingham, Berkshire. We may note that in census information in later years Alfred showed his mother as being born in South Africa. It is now possible to confirm this. Richard Sheppard, at the time of the 1851 census, is apparently in a military barracks as a private at Malew on the Isle of Man. He, his wife, and his later children are all shown as being born in England. Their oldest child, shown as Eliza, has given for a birth place Fort Beaufort, Cape of Good Hope. The three Sheppard children present in this census are all shown as being 'born in the army'. As recorded, Elizabeth Emily Sheppard married Alfred Charles Cook in 1865 at Nayland, Suffolk. She bore Alfred Richard Cook in 1866 at Colchester. Her husband Alfred died in September of 1867 in Canada She married Walter Albert Donno in 1869 in Yorktown, Surrey. She was with Walter at the time of the 1871 census in Islington. We do not have a death record for Walter nor do we have a record for Elizabeth's marriage to Joseph Henry Williams, but she appears with Joseph in the 1881 census at Southwark, London. There, Joseph is shown as a porter in a tea warehouse and as being born in Wales (other records show him as being born in Hereford.) Also with Emily is Alfred R. 'Williams', son, printer's boy, born Colchester. This is of course, Alfred Richard Cook, but shown under the name of his stepfather. Certainly, in later years, Alfred Richard Cook was in the printing trade. At the time of the 1891 census at Rotherhithe in London, we find Elizabeth Emily Williams, born Fort Beaufort, Cape of Good Hope, with her husband Joseph Henry Williams, a coffee stall keeper, born Hereford. With them are Henrietta Jane Orris, age 18, boarder, born Ipswich, Suffolk, and Charles Rivers Orris, age 19, boarder. These two are apparently sister and brother. Henrietta's civil birth registration at St. Matthew, Ipswich, Suffolk, in 1873, shows her as Henrietta Jane, born ninth February, 1873, 13 Wellington Street, Ipswich, father Rivers Orris, mother Jane Orris, formerly Armstrong. Rivers was a boot maker and he was the informant of the birth. On tenth July, 1894, at Brompton, Kensington, London, Henrietta Jane Orris, general servant, registered the birth of Primrose Williams Orris. No father is named. The informant is H.J. Orris, mother, 2 St. Mark's Grove. On October 10, 1894, at Clapham, St. Paul, Lambeth, Primrose Williams 'Horace' was baptized. The residence is shown as 42 Heath Road. No parents' given names are shown. On page 17A, School Board For London, it shows: Nbr. 830 Date of admission 1st May 1899, Williams, Primrose. Parent or Guardian Williams, Elizabeth. Address 10 Magee St. Date of birth 10 July, 1894. At the time of the 1901 census at St. Clements, Suffolk, England, we find Elizabeth Williams, age 56, born Fort Beaufort, Cape Colony, with her husband, Joseph H. Williams. With them is daughter Primrose, age 6, and Henrietta J. Orris, domestic servant. Joseph Henry Williams died 13th January, 1910. Informant and present at the death was E.E. Williams, widow of the deceased, 20 Paradise Road, Clapham Road. On July 27th, 1910, we find Elizabeth Williams, age 64, with daughters Henrietta, age 37, and Primrose, age 16, as passengers on the Oceanic from Southampton. They are destined Niagara Falls, New York, and evidently to Elizebeth's son, Alfred Richard Cook. They arrive too late for enumeration in the U.S. 1910 census and left England prior to the 1911 UK census. In 1914, Primrose Williams was married to Ivan Emerson Buck at the home of Alfred R. Cook in Niagara Falls. We find this in the Niagara Falls Gazette of 12 June 1914. (See Old Fulton New York Postcards' website.) Familysearch.org also provides us with the image of a marriage record. There, Primrose shows her parents as Elizabeth 'Emery' (Emily) and Joseph Williams. One of the witnesses was Alfred R. Cook. It seems reasonable to believe that Joseph and Elizabeth were foster parents to Primrose, but also included Henrietta Jane Orris in their family circle. Alfred Richard Cook applied for letters of administration of the estate of Elizabeth E. Williams, in Welland County, Ontario. See MS884 reel 1232, Welland Surrogate Court, Register F Administrations, page 282, application 3943. This is as written in the court clerk's copy book, or register. See also MS887 reel 1450 which shows the application for administration as well as supporting papers. In this application, he states that Elizabeth died 19th November, 1914. (Fairview Cemetery's web page shows Elizabeth's burial as 21 November.) In the application, Alfred Richard Cook declares himself to be her son and heir. Elizabeth died in Niagara Falls, New York, but the reason for the administration of her estate being applied for in Welland County is that she held property there. The application shows a brief inventory of Elizabeth's assets, but does not show any real estate. It does however show a mortgage, the mortgagor being Elizabeth Ann King (formerly Elizabeth Ann Russell) , Elizabeth Emily Williams' mother-in-law, who at this time is still living and is in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Elizabeth Emily Williams' assets were not great but probably covered the repayment of the mortgage and her burial, which, by the way, was conducted by Morse Funeral Home, the same family funeral home that buried her first husband in 1867 in Drummond Hill Cemetery. Alfred Richard Cook and his wife Carmenta Burnison are buried with Elizabeth Williams in Fairview Cemetery, Niagara Falls, Ontario. Elizabeth's grand daughter Ruth Cook Weir is buried there as well, her name being inscribed on the reverse side of the gravestone. |
