John Zybach
ID # 1885, (1854-1910)
Birth | John Zybach was born on 8 October 1854 at Hohfluh, Switzerland. |
Marriage | He married Elizabeth Ann Tucker, daughter of John Edwin Tucker and Margaret Long, on 10 November 1895. We do not have a marriage registration for John Zybach and Elizabeth Tucker. According to William Dalton, sexton of Drummond Hill Cemetery, Zybach was married twice. Per the 1881 census at Clifton, his first wife's name may have been Berel, or Beryl. Elizabeth (Bessie) Tucker was evidently his second wife. The Nov. 15, 1895, edition of The Buffalo Courier, has a brief item which reads: John Zybach, the well known photographer at Niagara Falls, Ont., and Miss Alice Tucker, who has been connected with the Barnett Cafe in Queen Victoria Park, were married November 10. This does not tell us where they were married, but it does appear to have been in the United States. Since it is clear that John Zybach was married to Elizabeth Ann Tucker, we must believe the given name 'Alice' to be a typographical error. |
Death | He died on 6 January 1910 at Niagara Falls, Ontario, at age 55. |
Burial | He was buried on 8 January 1910 at Drummond Hill Cemetery. |
Note | Drummond Hill Cemetery's sexton, William Dalton, provides us with the date of burial for John Zybach and some background material. He was a wood carver and local photographer of some note. Dalton says that he was married twice and, based on the evidence, Elizabeth Ann Tucker was his second wife. She outlived him by over 50 years. Zybach came to Canada and the Niagara Falls area in the 1870s. The 1880 census shows him married to Beral, age 20, and born in the U.S. Dalton says that they were divorced. The 1891 census shows John Zybach in Niagara Falls Town and as being married, but his wife is not present. There are two women and a man working in the house as domestic servants and one of them is Bessie Tucker. John and Bessie were married in 1895. It's possible that John Zybach was married three times. The December 29, 1880 issue of the Niagara Falls Gazette (per Old Fulton New York Post Cards) has a brief item to the effect that Jack Zybach, wood carver, was married to Catherine Berst of Buffalo, at Buffalo, on December 21st, 1880. Death reg. 031388-10 Niagara Falls, Welland County John Zybach died January 6, 1910, born Oct 13, 1855, at Hohfluh, Switzerland. Age 55. Of Bender Avenue, Niagara Falls, Ont., Merchant.
