Margaret Long

ID # 1880, (1836-1910)
BirthMargaret Long was born in 1836 at Scotland.
MarriageShe married John Edwin Tucker, son of John Tucker and Margaret Russell, on 31 December 1861 at Niagara City, Niagara County, New York.
The marriage certificate of John Edwin Tucker and Margaret Long McKenzie is in the possession of a descendant who has kindly permitted the use of the information appearing in it. It reads as follows:

Certificate of Marriage
This certifies that one the thirty first day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty one, at Niagara City Nigara County, and State of New York.
United in Marriage
Edwin Tucker of Drummondville, C.W. and Margaret McKinsey of the same place.
That I am satisfied that they are respectively of sufficient age to contract marriage; and are personally known by me, or satisfactorily proven, to be the persons above named. And also that after due inquiry made, there appeared no impediment to such marriage. I do further certify that David Nickerson and Elizabeth Wissler were present at such marriage or attesting witnesses.
Witnesses signatures: David Nickerson and Elizabeth Ann Wistler.
Signed Jacob K...illeg, Justive of the Peace.

Witness Elizabeth's surname rather illegible as written by the JP and not much more readable in her signature.

DeathShe died on 25 September 1910 at Niagara Falls, Ontario.
BurialShe was buried on 27 September 1910 at Drummond Hill Cemetery.
NoteShe It is evident from the 1871 census at Stamford Township that Edwin and Margaret had been married since the early 1860s. Margaret was a widow at the time and her first husband was George McKenzie. He is probably the George McKenzie who was buried in Drummond Hill Cemetery on December 5, 1859. The 1871 census shows George McKenzie, age 11, with Margaret and Edwin. It is possible that there was also a son David by her first marriage, but this is less certain.

Death registrations for Edwin's family seem to be in short supply. Some of our best information comes from the logs of William Dalton, sexton of Drummond Hill Cemetery.

Per William Dalton's records, Edwin and Margaret's son John died in 1893 and when Margaret died on September 25, 1910, she was buried beside him.

Dalton identifies her as Mrs. George McKenzey, wife of Edwin Tucker and dates her burial as September 27, 1910.

We find Margaret's maiden name, Long, on birth registration of daughter Elizabeth. The 1872 registration of daughter Cornelia shows her as Margaret Logie. However, the death registration in 1935 of Isabella Lulu Tucker in Dundas shows Margaret's maiden name as Long.
