Note | Note that in the 1851 Scottish census, Charles is presented as Charles Ness Dickson and as the grandson of James and Hannah. He is shown as being age 3, probably as of his next birthday. This would place his year of birth as being 1848 or 1849. Considering that the 1851 census names Charles as the grandson of James and Hannah, and considering Hannah's age, this is probably correct. It would appear, however, that they raised him as their own. Charles, in his marriage registration, names his parents as James and Hannah. The 1851 Scottish census tells that Charles was born in Currie, Midlothian, Scotland. Also, Currie is said to be the family's residence at this time. |
