| Note | The 1861 and 1871 censuses present us with some conflicting information for the children of Thomas and Mary Sanderson, mainly to do with approximate years of birth. Warner & Beers 1883 History of the County of Brant (pages 596 & 597) does provide us with a bit more clarity, if betimes imperfect. Some marriage and death information as well as gravestone transcriptions also provides some assistance. The biography for Thomas Sanderson as it appears in the Warner & Beers work states that Thomas and Mary had seven children...and immediately thereafter proceeds to give us eight names! And, yes, we do indeed inuit eight names as they appear on the enumerations of the 1861 and 1871 censuses. They are listed by Warner as: Charles, born May 30th, 1853; Richard, Aug. 19th, 1854, William C. born June 25th, 1858, died July 31st, 1862, Ada May 19th, 1862; Ellen J., June 14th, 1865; Thomas S., Oct. 25th, 167; Martha, Feb. 24th, 1869; Mary E., Nov. 10th, 1870. (With some fairness to Warner & Beers, it does appear that what the history means is that that the Sandersons have seven living children, son William having died in childhood.) It should be noted here that a brief biography for Thomas's sons Charles and Richard appears on page 596 of the Warner & Beers history. Their years of birth as shown do not agree with the list as shown for the children of Thomas Sr. and Mary as it appears on the next page. Page 596 shows Charles years of birth as 1855 and Richard's as 1856. Their birth years as they are shown with the rest of their siblings on page 597 has the virtue of at least having some logic in terms of the year of marriage shown for Thomas Sanderson and Mary Birkett, namely the 1st of January, 1852. To add to the available variations, Mary Birkett Sanderson evidently presented her son Charles for baptism as the Farringdon Church on 2nd July, 1854. Here, his date of birth is shown as 31 May, 1854. She also presented son Richard for baptism on 9 Dec., 1855, though, here, his date of birth is not given. The 1851 shows the children's paternal family as Church of England; the 1861 and 1871 censuses show the children and and their parents as baptists. Death reg. 006530-07 Brantford Twp., Brant Co. Thomas Sanderson died August 10th, 1907, age 79 years. Residence Newport, Brantford Twp. Farmer. Married. Born England. Methodist. The doctor was also apparently the informant who filed the registration. The surname of the doctor is illegible. |
