Waterloo County Marriage Register, 1863-1869

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by J. A. Miller and F. Haynes of the Methodist New Connection Church for the year ending 31st December, A.D. 1865

James Main, 22, born and residing Beverly. Parents David and Mary. Catherine Lee (age obscured, but 20 something), born and residing Beverly. Parents John and Mary Ann.
Witness Wm. Barnhart of Galt.
On February 1, 1865.

Catherine's year of birth, 1843, is approximated from her age in the 1861 census for Beverly Township. And, yes, Catherine's older sister, Elizabeth Lee, married James Main's older brother, William.

Going by census information, the Main and Lee families belonged to the United Brethren Church. The couple was married, however, by a New Connection Methodist Clergyman in Waterloo County. General proximities taken into consideration, this was probably in Galt, although just where this church was located in Galt is for the moment unknown. The church must have been between ministers for the county list of marriages for this church, as entered, shows two clergyman, J. A. Miller and F. Haynes. The year's marriage list was signed off by Rev. Haynes. Given that James and Catherine's marriage was relatively early in the year, they were likely married by Rev. Miller. A list of clergy for Ainslie Street Methodist has been checked. This church was, for a time back in the 1850s, a Methodist New Connection church. By the time the couple were married it had, for some time, been a Wesleyan Methodist church.

All considered, though the county marriage registrations for this don't directly say so, the marriage was probably held in Galt. This would make sense considering the proximity of Galt to Wentworth County's Beverly Township.
