Death reg. 022339-91 Toronto, York Co.
John T. Stokes died November 30, 1891, age 67, engineer. Born Portsmouth, England. Physician and informant Dr. W. J. Grieg, M.D.

Page 8 of the 2 December, 1891, edition of the Toronto Globe carries an obituary for John. This tells that his funeral was to be held the following day (December 3) at Newmarket. The obituary is to be found at the bottom of column one and continues at the top of column two. He is described as county engineer. His biography, mentioned above, shows him to be a man of considerable accomplishment.

It is quickly apparent, both from the 1851 and 1861 censuses, as well as from a transcription of the Newmarket Cemetery, that John's father and mother, George and Henrietta, came out to Canada, probably with John and Martha. George and Henrietta are buried next to John and Martha.
