Margaret McCaw
ID # 9765, (1846-1873)
Father | James McCaw (1807-1876) |
Mother | Margaret (--?--) (1807-1890) |
Birth | Margaret McCaw was born in 1846 at Co. Londonderry, Ireland. |
Marriage | She married William Findlay on 6 March 1871 at Toronto, York Co., Ontario. Mrge reg. Toronto, York Co. Wm. Findlay, 28, bachelor, sailor, Presbyterian. Born Greenoch, Scotland, residing Toronto. Parents Jas. and Jane Findlay. Margaret McCaw, 25, spinster, Presbyterian. Born Co. Derry, Ireland, residing Toronto. Parents James and Margaret McCaw. Witnesses David McCaw and May N. McCaw (residences not given). On 8 March, 1871, at Toronto, by Rev. Wm. Gregg. On several points, the registrar's handwriting is difficult. The father's parents probably have the first names James and Jane. The father's name is abbreviated and, up to a point, a guess. It probably is 'James', The given name of the second witness seems to be May, but could be Mary. Ancestry's indexers had some problems with the bride's surname, but one has only to look at the clearer handwriting for the surnames of the witnesses to realize that McCaw is correct. Margaret's place of birth is shown as County Derry, Ireland. Apparently, this is an abbreviation for County Londonderry. |
Death | She died on 4 December 1873 at Toronto, York Co.. |
Burial | She was buried on 5 December 1873 at M8 N1/2 Toronto Necropolis. |
Note | A death registration as such for Margaret McCaw Findlay has not been found. The Toronto branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, in cooperation with Familysearch, has scanned and presented copies of Toronto burial books (that's city of Toronto, not private or church burials), and this shows Margaret Finley, age 27, born Ireland, died Toronto on Dec. 4, 1873, of smallpox, and was buried on December 5 in the north half of what is Section H, lot 8, north half. (The letter for the section as written is questionable, but viewing other McCaw burials as they appear in the Toronto Necropolis burial books, this will be correct.) The owner of the lot is shown as H. McCaw. Given that daughter Margaret Findlay's marriage registration shows her mother to be Margaret McCaw, it seems we are on reasonably safe ground to say that Margaret McCaw, the wife of William Findlay, was the mother of the twins, Margaret and Mary. To hand is a transcription of the Toronto Necropolis. This has been searched for McCaws. Specifically, any transcription of Section H, lot 8, has been skipped over by the transcribers. We must believe that there was no visible stone to record. |
