MS248 reel 16, Vol. 76, page 16 Waterloo County Marriage Register, 1863-1869 Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Emmanuel Wurster of Preston, a minister of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church for the year ending 31st Day of December, A.D. 1864 Peter Soehl, 25, born Holstein, residing North Dumfries. Parents Hans Saehl and Maria Jahnko. Margaret Dryden, 24, born Galt, residing North Dumfries. Parents John Dryden and Margt Shiel. Witnesses Andrew Dryden and John Crohn, both of North Dumfries. On May 11, 1864. As with most entries in county marriage registers, the exact place of the marriage is not stated. All considered, this one almost certainly took place in the town of Preston. Beyond this, there are one or two points of interest. First, the page. Page 16 of this volume, was not scanned and, hence, does not appear in the publically available marriage register. And since it was not scanned, it does not appear on microfilm. The Waterloo Marriage Register is available for viewing on Familysearch, but it will be noted that page 16 is missing. A query was sent to the Archives of Ontario and a very excellent fellow retrieved the original register from their off site storage. He found that the page had indeed been missed at the time of scanning. He scanned the twin pages and forwarded the image to your researcher. Going the extra mile, he noticed that the way the twin pages met omitted the ages of the brides from the top of the page to the bottom. He kindly added this information with his reply. Your researcher shared this page and information with Waterloo Generations, the Ontario Genealogy Society, and one or two other interested persons. An interesting sidebar to the above is that, via the branch pages at the Ontario Genealogical Society, there are, for the Waterloo-Wellington branch, page images for marriages for Rev. Wurster's church. The handwriting on the original page is such that the spelling of the groom's name is a bit uncertain. The church record page covering the marriage is written a bit more clearly. Where it's possible to get into some confusion is that the entry in the marriage register appears to show Peter's surname as Saehl, and his father's surname likewise. The church record page shows Peter's name as Soehl and his father's as Sohl (with an umlaut). Take your choice. Beyond all that, finding the couple in later years is a bit of a challenge. A followup note to the spelling of the groom's surname: There are transcriptions and translations done for the Berliner Journal. Your researcher has had these sitting in his files for years. I cannot find the source information, but it is believed that these transcriptions were done by the Kitchener library. One of these is entitled Berliner Journal Newspaper Marriages, 1860-1872. This briefly records a marriage notice from the May 26, 1864, edition of the Journal, for Peter Soehl and Margaret 'Drydon', both of North Dumfries. The marriage is dated May 11, 1864. The notice provides no parental information, but it does provide some confirmation of the spelling of the groom's surname. |
