Note | William Knapp's birth predated birth registrations. Information for something of his life, including his birth, marriage, and date of death, is taken from page 242, Volume 12, of Donald A. McKenzie's Obituaries from the Christian Guardian, 1896 to 1900, Global Heritage Press, Milton, Ontario (now of Ottawa). This tells that William was born on April 28, 1857. It goes on to say that he married Eliza Jane Wallace on February 27, 1889. He is said to have died suddenly on November 9, 1898, on his farm in Montague Township (Lanark County), which was near Merrickville. (Merrickville is across the Rideau River from Montague and in Wolford Township of Grenville County.) William's parents are said to be John K. Knapp and Jane Scott. (John and Jane are buried in Union Cemetery, Merrickville, and John's middle initial is shown as S on their gravestone.) William's date of death as it appears in his obituary agrees with his date of death as it appears on his gravestone. His wife, Eliza Jane, died in 1935 and is buried with him. William's baptism with the Wesleyan Methodist Church, also dates his birth to 28 April, 1858. His baptism was in Montague Township on 3 October, 1858, and the clergyman was R. Hobbs. William's baptism may be found on: https://bowergenealogy.ca/resources/methodist/ A search will easily show the Knapp baptisms and William's appears on the same page as that of his sister Melissa Anne. As mentioned, William was baptized by R. Hobbs; Melissa was baptized by R. W. Hammond two years later. The page is for baptisms in the Township of Montague, Lanark County. |
