| Note | Robert Craig appears with his parents William and Hannah Craig in the 1851 census as enumerated at Chinguacousy Township, Peel County. In turn, William and Hannah with son Robert are also with daughter Jane's family. Jane is married to Stephen Monk. There is also an agricultural census which is shown as Craig & Monk, Concession 5, Chinguacousy. There is also a lot number that is represented by ditto marks, the original lot number being illegible although apparently assigned to numbers of owners. Further research is required on this. Robert has yet to be found with certainty in the 1861 census. The 1871 census shows Robert in Minto Township of Wellington County. With him is Elizabeth Monk, his neice. She was married the next year to Walter Hayes. Robert has yet to be found in the 1881 census. Death reg. 018343-88 Palmerston, Wellington Co. Robert Craig died Oct 11/88, age 74. Born Ireland. Farmer. Methodist. Cause of death old age. Physician Dr. Stewart. Informant Walter Hayes. Robert's place of burial has yet to be found. Evidence for the Craig's story is very incomplete. William and Hannah no doubt had other children beside Jane and Robert. Some comments with regards to the Craig family in Chinguacousy Township in Peel county in 1851 and Minto Township in Wellington county in 1861 era. There is a website, Ontario Land Registry Access ( https://www.onland.ca/ui/62 ) which is of some assistance in researching a family's history on a given property. It has its limitations. It will not permit you to copy the image of a page. It will sell it to you. Mostly, it's possible to read the pertinent lines on the page and copy them into a note app. The pages are not always easily readable, however. How a purchased copy might appear, your researcher has no idea. When your researcher could travel to the Ontario archives most such pages could be scanned to memory stick and most were emminently readable. Those days are done. The 1851 Chinguacousy Township Agricultural census shows a Craig & Monk on Concession 5, but the listing of the lot number is most unsatisfactory. On just what lot this property was located has not been located. The best that may be said is that it comprised 100 acres. Robert Craig has not been found in the 1861 or 1881 censuses, but he appears in Minto Township of Wellington County and, as mentioned above his niece Elizabeth Monk is with him. McGill University has a website (see https://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/searchmapframes.php ). This has maps and resident lists that have been extracted from old atlases and provides some information for Minto Township from an 1877 atlas. This shows an R. Craig at lot 30 of concession 1 with 100 acres. It also shows a W. Craig at lot 26 of concession 1 and lot 12 of concession 15. R. Craig and W. Craig may or may not be related. Do bear in mind that William Craig, Robert's father, died in 1862. Here, with the Onland website it is possible to track down some information for a W. Craig at lot 26 of the first concession. Again, it is very difficult to read. This may encourage family members to research some of these Onland images. Your researcher hasn't been very successful. What may simply be said is that Robert Craig died in 1888 and the informant of his passing (the person passing the information of Robert's passing to the township registrar) was Walter Hayes, the husband of Elizabeth Monk, who we must believe to be the Elizabeth Monk who was with Robert at the time of the 1871 census. That and Elizabeth and Walter Hayes are buried in Palmerston Cemetery next to Robert's parents, William and Hannah. Is Robert buried there as well? A place of burial for Robert hasn't been found, but that he's buried with his parents has at least the earmarks of a reasonable guess. Perhaps an obituary will turn up that provides further information. |
