Grey County Marriage Register, 1858-1869

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Thos. Feather, a minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, for the year ending 31st December, 1865

Joseph Best, 21, born Ireland, residing Collingwood Tp. Parents John and Esther.
Cath. Irwin, 20 (?), born Ireland, residing Collingwood Tp. Parents Nicholas and Mary.
Witnesses James Ennis and John Badger, both of Collingwood.
On March 14, 1865.

The registration entry for Rev. Feather's marriages locates him in Thornbury. The county marriage registers do not typically show just where the marriage was performed. It may have been in Thornbury, but could just as easily have been performed elsewhere in the county. Some clergy were not even particular as to recording in which county they actually performed the marriage. The best we may say is that in all probability Joseph and Catherine were married in Grey County, probably in Collingwood Township, for, if nothing else, we may safely say that Thornbury is located in Collingwood Township.

DeathHe died on 15 July 1938 at Gore Bay, Gordon Twp., Manitoulin District, at age 95.
BurialHe was buried on 16 July 1938 at Gordon Cemetery, Gordon Twp., Manitoulin Island.

Joseph Best died July 15, 1938, age 95 yrs., 2 mos., 14 dys. Widower. Born Belfast, Ireland. Date of birth ...illeg. Parents John Best, born Belfast, Ireland, and Ester Sefton, born Ireland. Physician F. A. Strain. Informant Catherine Greenman, Gore Bay, daughter. Burial Gordon Cemetery, July 16th, 1938.

The 1901 census shows Joseph's date of birth as May 1st, 1844; the above death registration might reasonably interpreted as having a date of birth of May 1st, and, certainly, the year of birth as 1843. His gravestone, per a transcription as provided by Manitoulin Genealogy, shows his year of birth as 1843. This is probably correct.

Joseph's baptism record has been found. What is available is a transcription and originates with the file: Ireland Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911. Index Salt Lake City, Utah. It identifies Joseph's baptism date as 10 May, 1843, at Aghalee in Antrim. His father is shown as John Best and his mother as Esther. The FHL film number is given as 908817. The baptism information for Joseph does not tell us the church wherein Joseph was baptized.

It should be commented here that if indeed Joseph was born in Belfast and then ten days later baptized in Aghalee, then Belfast, shown as his place of birth on his death registration, may have been offered more in the way of a generality. Both Belfast and Aghalee are in County Antrim, but they are quite some miles apart. It may be that Aghalee was actually his place of birth.

Such information as may be found for the parental family of Joseph is taken from the 1851 census as enumerated at Aghalee, Co. Antrim. Elsewhere, this is said to be a 'fragment' of the 1851 census. Not a great deal in the way of census information for Ireland in the early years has survived.
