| Note | The Newfoundland Department of Public Health and Welfare records the following birth and baptism: Parish of the Change Islands, District of Fogo Birth Sept. 4, 1888, place of birth Change Islands, parents Joseph Edmund and Eliza Elliott, child's name Bessie, baptism October 3, 1888. Clergyman G. A. Chamberlain, Church of England. Father's occupation fisherman. (There are 16 births and baptisms recorded on the page and in every instance the father was a fisherman.) The Waterloo-Wellington branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has transcribed Section 5 of Mountview Cemetery in Cambridge/Galt. This records the inscription on Swan and Bessie's gravestone and records her date of birth as 4 September, 1888. Ontario census information records Bessie's place of birth as Newfoundland. The 1921 census also shows that she came to Ontario in 1909. This same census shows Bessie's mother to be with them. She is Eliza Elliott, age 70, and tells that she came to Ontario in 1920. A death registration for Eliza has been sought, but not yet found. Find-a-Grave records a grave for Joseph Edmund Elliott in St. Margaret's Anglican Churchyard, Change Islands, and records his death as being in 1914. A photo of his gravestone is not provided. Certainly, we have a list of deaths from the Fogo District and this shows Joseph E. Elliott's death and burial as being in the Change Islands. He was age 64, a fisherman, and he died on November 12, 1914. A family story has it that at some point, probably prior to Bessie's marriage to Swan, she worked for a time in Galt at Sloan's General Store on Water Street. She is said to have worked with Harvie Buchanan, who also appears in this tree, and who worked for Sloan's for many years. The 1914 Vernon's directory for Galt shows Bessie Elliott residing at 126 Cambridge Street, and she is indeed shown as a saleslady for John Sloan. The householder guide in this directory shows a John Perrin at this address. Was Bessie renting a room here? |
