| Note | When John's name first appeared in census information, John O. Joyce, it was reasonable to assume that his full name was John Oakley Joyce. It is now possible to say that this was the case. A birth registration for John has not been found, but he appeared with his parents from the time of the 1881 census through to the 1891 census. The 1881 census shows his age as 7 and the 1891 as 17. In this latter census, he is shown as a sailor. The 1881 census was begun on the 4th of April and the 1891 census on the 6th of April. Since John was born in October of 1873 (see below), his ages, as shown at the time of censuses, should be correct. John is said to have drowned accidently, at Chicago, on 9 July, 1892. A death registration, below, was entered with the clerk of Trafalgar Township by a minister at Bronte and shows the date of his death as 9 July, 1892, and tells that he was drowned accidently. John Oakley Joyce's remains, however, were returned to the family and he is buried with his Grandmother Oakley in Merton Mount Pleasant Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Trafalgar Township. This cemetery is near what was the town of Bronte (now a part of the city of Oakville.) Apparently, the inscription on the stone was entered as: John Oakley Joyce, Oct 21, 1873 - July 9, 1902. Just how this happened is impossible to say, but the transcription of the cemetery (as done by the Halton-Peel branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society) shows the very next stone to read: John Oakley Joyce born Oct 21, 1873 at Bronte drowned July 9, 1892, at Chicago. The only other thing to be said is that John's brother, Joseph Charles Joyce, named a son after him. A death registration for John Oakley Joyce, at Chicago, has not been found. The registration as filed at Trafalgar Township is as follows: Death reg. 006459-92 Trafalgar Township, Halton Co. Oakley Joyce died 9 July, 1892, age 92. Born Bronte. Baptist. Cause of death accidently drowning. Physician none. Informant David...illeg. surname...minister, Bronte. Since death registrations were only to be filed in the city or municipality where it occurred, the above is technically incorrect, but the clergyman no doubt filed it at the request of the family. The registrar was probably aware of the circumstances, but likely didn't quibble. This isn't the only such example. |
