Note | At first glance it is difficult to nearly impossible to find the McTaggart family in the 1851 or 1861 censuses. The family resided during these times in either Prince Edward County (Bay of Quinte area) or in Hastings County, adjacent to Prince Edward. There is evidence to show that the McTaggart and Morden families resided for at least a time in Prince Edward County and probably did so at the time of the 1851 census, perhaps at Sophiasburg Township. A difficulty here is that the 1851 census pages for Sophiasburg no longer exist. We are left to work with marriage registrations, and, certainly, Joseph's parents, George McTaggart and Ann Morden, were married in Prince Edward County, probably in Sophiasburg, though the marriage registrations from the era do not specifically locate the exact place of marriages. Spelling problems have, in turn, caused indexing problems with the 1861 census, but with a bit of perseverance the family may be found in Tyendinaga Township of Hastings County. And, again, the family of George and Ann McTaggart may be found in the 1871 census, yet again at Tyendinaga Township. Joseph is with his parents, George and Ann, in both these censuses. A marriage registration for Joseph McTaggart and Mary Eliza Curtis has not been found, but, going by the age of their (apparently) first born, Emma Jane, born in 1873, they must have married after the time of the 1871 census, but probably not later than 1872. The 1881 census has its own baggage so far as some reproductions of the pages can be found, but it may be said that Joseph and Mary Eliza were on Barrie Island (a part of Manitoulin Island) in the Algoma District. Beyond this, the place of birth for Albert Edgar McTaggart, born 1877, appears as Hastings County in his marriage registration at Gore Bay, Manitoulin. The 1891 census shows the place of birth for Alice M. McTaggart (born approximately 1880) as Manitoulin. The best we may say is that the McTaggart family came to Barrie Island in Manitoulin between 1877 and 1880. (Mordens also appear in the 1881 census for Barrie Island. Considering Joseph McTaggart's parentage, it may be that the migration from Hastings County to Manitoulin was extended family in its nature.) There were two death registrations filed for Joseph McTaggart. One was filed by Albert McTaggart on August 13th, 1906, and appears on a page entitled 'Unorganized'. This will refer to townships. The filing clerk's surname was Kenny. The other registration was filed by Mary McTaggart on September 10th, 1906, at the Town of Gore Bay. Here, the clerk's name appears to be Milton Webb (the surname is a bit smudged.) There are a couple of differences, and so both are transcribed below. Death reg. 005607-06 Unorganized (Township), Manitoulin (District) Joseph McTaggart died Aug. 11/06. Age 59. Residence Barrie Island. Farmer. Married. Born Deseronto. Methodist. Cause of death inflammation of the bowels. 3 days. Physician Dr. Johnson. Informant Albert McTaggart. Filed with the township clerk Aug/ 13/06 And the 2nd: Death reg. 005123-06 Gore Bay, District of Manitoulin Joseph McTaggart died Aug. 11/06. Age 59. Residence Barrie Island. Farmer. Married. Born Hastings (County). Brethern. Cause of death somewhat illegible, but evidently Inflammation of bowels. Physician Dr. Johnson. Informant Mary McTaggart. Filed with town clerk at Gore Bay on Sept. 10/06. It may be that Joseph died at his residence on Barrie Island, but there is some evidence that he had family in Gore Bay and so this isn't necessarily the case. In early days, appendicitis was called inflammation of the bowels and this was probably the cause of Joseph's death. |
