Note | Such information as we have for Henry Fyfe and Anne Burke, is taken from page 122 of Rev. Donald McKenzie's Vol. 1, Death Notices from the Christian Guardian, 1836-1850, Global Heritage Press, Milton (now Ottawa), 2011. Donald McKenzie's extraction from the Christian Guardian includes the June 25th, 1845, edition, wherein appears a death notice. He also refers to the August 20th, 1845, edition, where is found an obituary. This tells that Anne was the daughter of the late Thomas Burke and that she was born on June 30, 1807, in County Wexford, Ireland. She was said to have come to Canada with her mother and family in 1817, her father having come the previous year. The family was said to have come initially to Drummond Township (later in Lanark County), but moved to York Township in 1823. In 1829 Anne is said to have married Henry J. Fyfe of Esquesing (later in Halton County). She visited Scotland with her husband in 1837 and then the couple is said to have settled on Yonge Street where she died on the 18th inst. (June of 1845). She was buried from Cummer's Chapel and survived by her husband. This does not tell us where she was buried, though we may say that the burial service was at Cummer's Chapel. (By 1834 this, according to a church history, was known as Cummer Settlement Methodist Episcopal Chapel.) The obituary makes no mention of children. A transcription of the Cummer Burial Grounds has been found. This was done in 1993. It is believed that there were burials in this cemetery as far back as 1811. Some gravestones were moved to other cemeteries and, so far as is known, such are listed. No gravestones are recorded for Fyfe or Burke. To what extent the family of Henry Johnson Fyfe might have been connected with the church, also known as the Willowdale Methodist Episcopal Cemetery, is unknown. There are several members of a Johnson family recorded as being buried here, one of whom was a Henry Johnson. We cannot know if person was the origin of Henry Johnson Fyfe's given names. With a name as common as Johnson, this is probably circumstantial. Having said all that, it is at the least highly likely that Anne was buried in Cummer Burial Grounds. For the moment, that's the best that may be said. We know next to nothing of Henry Johnson Fyfe. |
