Eliza Jane Gross
ID # 9054, (1845-)
Father | Horace Gross (1821-1901) |
Mother | Aurelia Smith (1823-1859) |
Birth | Eliza Jane Gross was born on 4 November 1845 at Brighton, Newcastle District. |
Marriage | She married William Fitzherbert Bullen on 27 April 1871 at Glencoe. Initially, we take the name of the groom and the date of marriage for Eliza Gross from Harriet Dickinson's Cory family book. This tells that she was married on 27 April, 1871, to William Bullen. The marriage registration has been found and is as follows: Mrge reg. Bothwell (electoral district) Kent Co. William Fitzherbert Bullen, 35, widower, accountant. Church of England. Born Delaware, Ont., residing London, Ont. William Fitzherbert and Eliza Ann Bullen. Eliza Jane Gross, 25, spinster, Church of England. Born Brighton, residing Glencoe. Parents Horace and Aurelia Gross. Witnesses William G. Lumley, M.D., and Elizabeth Currie, Glencoe. On 27 April, 1871, at Glencoe, by Rev. D. Deacon, Bothwell, Kent. The first problem with the above marriage registration is the handwriting of the registering clerk. The place of marriage is taken to be Glencoe, though it takes a bit of squinting at the handwriting. Glencoe actually sits on the border of Mosa and Ekfrid Townships in Middlesex County and is well within the borders of Middlesex County. The above registration shows Bothwell as though it were a county, but it was rather an electoral district. Such literature found would not appear to include Glencoe within its boundaries. Alternatively, the marriage was indeed held in Glencoe, but it may be that Rev. Deacon resided in Kent County and did not filed the registration of the marriage until he returned home and did such locally. This was not unheard of. William Lumley, M.D., as he appears as a witness in the above registration was apparently a resident of Mosa Township in Middlesex County. This is according to the 1871 census. Elizabeth Currie is to be found in the 1871 census and she resides in Ekfrid Township. This could well place her in or near Glencoe. |
