| Note | If John C. Tilt ever married, a registration has not been found. A wife does not appear in any census information. John's parents were married in Listowel, Perth County, Ontario, in 1867. John, age 2, is with his parents in Listowel at the time of the 1871 census. To this point, we do not have a recording of another sibling. Neither John nor his parents have been found in the 1881 Canadian census. The 1900 U.S. census in St. Louis, Missouri, shows a John C. Tilt, age 31, born November of 1868, residing in a boarding house, occupation salesman. This tells that he came to the U.S. in 1887. It's a bit of a stretch from salesman to physician, but... By the time of the 1920 U.S. census, John C. Tilt is in Saint Joseph City, Missouri. He is shown as a physician and general practitioner. This does show his coming to the U.S. in 1896, but... The 1930 census shows John as a guest in a hotel. Again, his coming to the U.S. is shown as 1896. He is a physician. The 1940 census shows John, age 70, back in St. Louis. All these census years show John as being born in Canada. Find-a-Grave tells that he died in 1940. He is buried in St. Joseph Memorial Park. |
