Note | Susan's maiden name, Gotby, was variously spelled, including 'Gadsby'. Her marriage registration and her name as inscribed on her gravestone in Old Blair Memorial Cemetery, shows it as Gotby. The 1851 census in Wellesley Township shows Susan with her parents. She is age nine. The 1861 census shows Susan, age 17, with her parents and siblings in Wellesley Township. Here, the family name is spelled as Gotsby. They are shown as being Wesleyan Methodists. Her father John is shown as age 56 and as being born in England; her mother Ann's age isn't entirely clear, but is probably 46. She is shown as being born in Canada West. The census page shows John and Ann as being married during the year 1839. The 1871 census shows Susan as Susan Trimble, age 26, with daughter Amelia Ann, age 2. She is a widow and with her parents John and Ann 'Gadsby'. A first marriage for Susan has yet to be found. The only slim lead we have is that Amelia Ann's ancestry is given as Irish and this will be the ethnic background of her father. Death reg. 032932-25 Waterloo Twp., Waterloo Co. Susan Tilt died June 15, 1925, age 80 yrs., 11 mos., 12 dys. Born Wellesley, July 3, 1844. House wife. Parents John Gotby and Ann Rush, both born England. Physician A. Hawke of Galt, Ont. Informant Chas. Tilt of Doon, son. Burial Blair Cemetery, June 17th, 1925. The above death registration shows Susan's mother's place of birth as England. Other information (census) locates her birth in Canada and Canada is probably correct. A few words here as to Susan's place of birth: Her marriage registration with John Tilt places her birth in Markham, and considering that her parents were farmers that would mean the township as opposed to the town. Her death registration, however, places her birth in Wellesley, again, probably, the township. Her Wesleyan Methodist baptism record has been found, however and this shows her place of birth as Whitby, again probably the township. The caveat here is that the handwriting on the baptism page (page nbr. 359, Wellesley), is difficult. The people doing the indexing not unreasonably show the name as Gotley. Careful examination of the handwriting shows it as Gotby. (The image of the baptism page may be found on: http://bowergenealogy.ca/resources/methodist/ ) Four of the Gotby children were baptized on the same day - April 25th, 1847. The date of birth for Susan's older brother Wilmot is poorly written and not much may be made of it other than it does tell that he was born in Markham. The place of birth for Susan takes some peering at, but we may reasonably make Whitby out of it and so this is shown as such in this tree. Susan's date of birth is shown on the baptism page as 3 July 1843 and this collides with the date of the birth of Wilmot, her older brother. Her death registration shows her year of birth as 1844 and so does the 1901 census at Doon, Waterloo Township. 1844 will be the correct for her year of birth. |
