Charles Cosens of this parish, a bachelor, and Anne Miller of this parish, a spinster, were married in this church by banns this twentieth day of February, 1832.
By me, George Harvey Feachen, B.A., Curate.
Witnesses Mary Ann Cosens and Cornelius Cosens.

MarriageHe married Lucinda Clemens on 24 February 1858 at Oxford County.
Before quoting this marriage registration, it should be said that it was poorly entered on the form. The parentage was entered out of alignment. The following is a bit of an interpretation, but, taking into consideration information provided by Ezra Eby in his 1895 biographies, the following should be correct.

For purposes of this tree, Charles is really Charles Cosens Jr. He had a son Charles, however, hence the designation 'senior'.

BurialHe was buried at Augusta Evangelical Cemetery, Wallace Twp., Perth Co..
NoteFor Charles' obituary, see pages 94 & 95 of Volume 12, Obituaries from the Christian Guardian, 1896 to 1900, Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, Milton (now of Ottawa), 2013. This tells that Charles Cosens was born in Hampshire, England, on September 23rd, 1812, and came to Canada in 1832 and settled in Waterloo Township. Here the obituary elides somewhat for it goes on to say that in 1861 he moved to Wallace Township (in Perth County), though the 1851 census tells us that, at the time, he and Anne were located in Wilmot Township.

The obituary goes on to tell that he died on the Fordwich Circuit (this will be of the Wesleyan Methodist Church) on March 26, 1898, and is survived by his wife, and children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. McKenzie refers to the Guardian's edition of April 20, 1898, page 247.

Death reg. 016988-98 Wallace Twp., Perth Co.
Charles Cosens died March 26, 1898, age 85 yrs. Residence lot 44, concession 3. Farmer. Born England. Methodist. Physician and informant W. E. Dingman.

Actually, Dr. Dingman filed two death registrations for Charles. One he filed with the township clerk for Wallace Township and the other with the town clerk for Listowel. This was probably accidental. The one difference is that on the Listowel death registration, Charles' residence is shown as Wallace Township. On the Wallace Township registration, Charles' residence is shown as lot 44, concession 3.

Perth County's cemeteries have been transcribed by the Perth County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. For the present, they have not been digitized but are in print and, for the moment, your researcher does not have any of them to hand. The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid shows Charles to be buried in the Augusta Evangelical Cemetery. This is backed up with a photo of his gravestone in Find-a-Grave. The person maintaining the Find-a-Grave site for Charles lists his three spouses and provides their dates of death. This is not sourced and, in any event, is someone else's work and effort and so this is not 'copied' here. Charles 3rd wife, Catherine Stewart, died during the era when death registrations were available and so is shown. The death dates for Ann Miller and Lucinda Clemens are quite probably correct as shown on the Find-a-Grave site. No place of burial has been found for any of Charles' wives. Such may be found in obituaries at some point.

A note about the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid (OCFA):

This is an excellent reference. The one care that should be taken is that it simply shows a given name as appearing on a stone in a given cemetery. The person may well be buried there. Such is the situation for the listing of Charles. However, the listed name might simply be that of a parent or spouse and does not necessarily guarantee that the person is actually buried there. It's still an excellent guide.
